Okay so figuring out skincare routine steps is like trying to follow IKEA instructions but your face is the furniture. And online? It’s even worse. One person says use 12 steps, another says “just splash water and you’re good.” So here’s a non-expert, definitely-human breakdown of what actually works — especially for normal, kinda-lazy people in the U.S. who want nice skin without turning their bathroom into a science lab.
Step 1: Cleanser (aka Wash Your Dang Face)
Use it morning and night. That’s non-negotiable. You don’t need some $80 miracle wash — just one that doesn’t dry you out or leave your face feeling like a rubber mask.
Pro tip: If your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser might be too harsh.
Step 2: Toner (…Do we still use this??)
Honestly, this one’s optional. Back in the day, toner used to be that alcohol-smelling stuff that stung like betrayal. But now they’re more hydrating or exfoliating. If you’re using a gentle one, cool. If not? You’re not missing much.
Step 3: Serum (the fun but confusing part)
This is where you target stuff — acne, wrinkles, dark spots, that weird red patch on your chin, whatever. There’s vitamin C (brightens), niacinamide (calms), hyaluronic acid (hydrates), retinol (anti-aging but can be harsh), etc.
Don’t stack five serums unless you’re trying to do chemistry in your bathroom. Stick to one or two max — your face is not a test tube.
Step 4: Moisturizer (don’t skip it, even if you’re oily)
A lotta people in the U.S. think if you have oily skin you don’t need moisturizer. Wrong. Oil ≠ hydration. Use a lightweight one if you’re greasy, thicker one if you’re dry. Your skin will thank you and stop acting out.
Also, moisturizer kinda seals in everything you did before, like the final layer of a breakfast sandwich.
Step 5: Sunscreen (yes, even if it’s cloudy, yes even if you’re inside)
If you’re not doing this step… what’s even the point? Sunscreen prevents like 85% of skin problems people complain about (aging, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, fine lines, etc).
SPF 30+ is the baseline. And no, your foundation with “a little SPF” doesn’t count. Sorry.
PM Routine (Nighttime’s a lil different)
-
Still start with cleanser
-
Then maybe a toner (or skip)
-
Then a night serum — like retinol, if you’re into that
-
Then moisturizer — heavier is fine at night
-
Eye cream? Optional. Kinda overhyped unless your under-eyes are mad dry
-
No sunscreen needed (unless you sleep in the sun for some reason)
Weekly Extras (aka when you’re feelin’ fancy)
-
Exfoliate 1–2x a week: physical (scrub) or chemical (AHA/BHA). Don’t do both unless you like pain.
-
Face masks: fun, but don’t expect magic. Clay for oily skin, sheet masks for hydration.
-
Lip balm, neck cream, hand lotion: All part of the vibe if you’re going full cozy-self-care-mode.
Things I’ve Messed Up Before (So You Don’t)
-
Putting vitamin C and retinol together = nope
-
Using like 4 new products at once = breakout city
-
Skipping moisturizer because I “didn’t need it” = flaky forehead for a week
-
Forgetting sunscreen after a peel = big regret, lots of aloe
Final Thoughts (aka just do what works for you tbh)
Listen, skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Most dermatologists in the U.S. will say the core is: cleanse → treat (if needed) → moisturize → SPF. That’s it. You can make it fancier if you want, but you don’t have to.
And don’t let TikTok convince you your skin needs a 9-step routine and snail slime from Korea. (Unless you want to try it. Snail stuff kinda slaps, not gonna lie.)
Just be consistent, drink water (ugh), and give products time before switching. Your skin isn’t Netflix — don’t keep skipping to the next thing every week.
If you’re still confused, honestly just go to Target or Ulta and pick stuff for your skin type. That’s how half of us started. You’ll figure it out.
